Artist Opportunities
The Gallery
at Eleven Pleasant Street
Artists affiliated with VSA arts of Maine have made it clear
that what they most need, right now, is training in the business end of
the art world. In response to that need, VSA arts of Maine has opened a
gallery in our elegant new space in Brunswick. The gallery will
showcase the work of our affiliated artists and serve as a site for
apprenticeships. Apprentices will work one-on-one with the gallery
director, selecting and pricing artwork, creating displays, holding art
openings, selling artwork, reviewing weekly sales reports and managing
the finances of the gallery. At the end of each apprenticeship, the
apprentice will be paired with an established artist in a mentoring
relationship structured and supported by VSA arts.
Today arts-related occupations represent 3.5% of New England's
workforce and the field is growing at twice the rate of New England's
overall economy. We know that supporting people with disabilities to
develop arts-related skills is a practical step toward employment,
greater financial independence, and greater recognition by society as a
whole. VSA arts of Maine is delighted to offer this new program to
support artists with disabilities in learning the business of art.
The Gallery at
Eleven Pleasant Street is a new project of our Career Arts program
(see

Exhibition by Artists with Disabilities
A Matter of Perception is our biennial
exhibition that showcases and celebrates the artwork
and talent of Maine artists with disabilities.
The purpose of the exhibition is to enhance public
awareness of disability issues, provide exhibition opportunities for
artists with disabilities, and to promote the work of the artists. In
addition, this exhibition provides artists the opportunity to market
and sell their artwork, as well as to bring awareness to the many
quality arts programs throughout the state.
